A look at a 15" Telpe Mirror, with Ronchi history. The fabrication of this 15" F4.5 primary telpe mirror began with a planoplano blank. I used my own diamond …
Before starting machine grinding and polishing, one should at least read several books on mirror making. Most of these books will be about hand work, but knowledge of calculating and measuring a sagitta, pouring pitch laps, building tile tools, and most importantly reading and interpreting the Ronchi and Foucault tests are extremely important.
In our shop we use fixed-post grinding and polishing, then parabolizing with an Elgin style system. Fixed-post machine grinding is where the mirror is on a turntable rotating around, and a 75% tool is on top.
I'm thinking of making my own fixed post mirror grinding/polishing and curve generating machine. I've got loads of …
The time it takes to grind and polish a concave mirror using a grinding/polishing machine can vary depending on the size and complexity of the mirror and the precision required. However, it is not uncommon for the process to take several days or even weeks to achieve a high-quality finish.
A grinding machine is a production machine tool used in the manufacturing industry in which the grinding wheel is attached in the tool post and the workpiece is fixed to the work table and when the operation starts it removes the unwanted material to get the desired surface finish, correct size, and accurate shape of the workpiece.
After grinding, polishing and figuring, this 24" F3.5 mirror produced a very nice test result. The larger and the faster the mirror, the tougher it is to get a great surface. FigureXP rated the surface at a bit better than 1/16th …
George Willis Ritchey built this mirror grinding machine at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, in the late 1890s. Under the sponsorship of George Ellery Hale, the machine was used to grind a series of telpe mirrors starting with a 60-inch mirror for a telpe initially intended for the Yerkes Observatory.

In particular, we've been discussing building a fixed post mirror grinding turntable for cutting mirrors up to about a 24inch diameter to spherical. Its only a pipe dream at the moment, but has anyone had …
Fritz STUDER AG was formed in 1912 and manufactures grinding machines for internal and external cylindrical grinding for small and middle sized work pieces. Our strength lies in single, small and middle sized job lots mainly for the markets of machine tooling, electrics and electronics, tooling and job shops.
Our tool post grinders are available with both integral and interchangeable spindles, plus you'll find grinders with external and internal spindle types. We carry tool post grinder spindles and adapters in a variety of sizes and compatibilities as well, so you're sure to find the right solution for your grinding applications.
A grinding machine consists of the following parts: 1. Base – The base of the grinding machine supports the other parts of the machine. It is made of cast iron and rests on a flat foundation. 2. Column – The column is a vertical structure that supports the grinding wheel and the grinding head. It is made of cast iron and has a dovetail slide …

Newtonian mirror is actually applied to the front face of the glass, not the back. The light collected by the Newtonian primary mirror does not pass through any glass until it reaches the eyepiece. It simply reflects off the curved concave mirror face which focuses all the light collected to a point known as the "focal point" of the mirror.

A few years back we made 3 MoM's. Two that can handle 20" mirror and a third one capable of grinding a 10" mirror. We built the two larger machines in my workshop. They're standing side by side and together with my best friend Marc we grinded lots of mirrors with it.
Turning the screw-eye raises and lowers the grinder height in minute increments. A flap of Velcro holds down the trigger on the grinder so it is always on. The grinder is controlled from a remote air valve in the air line. Here is a front view of the cutter arm. It fits on the same pipe post that the grinder arm sits on.

Spin polishing 16" mirror. Here you can see a 16" mirror being polished. Contrary to the 12" example in the previous video, very little CeO and low turntable speed is being used. The reason for this is that even using …
The mirror grinding machine that Leonardo designed was an innovative and efficient mechanism for producing high-quality optical surfaces. It was based on the use of a rotating tool that was driven by a series of gears, which allowed for precise control over the grinding process.
